This weekend, you'll be held in a beautiful private garden in Santa Monica - sun, soil, birdsong, and living green all around you. There's a reason we're not doing this in a fluorescent-lit room. Universal life force energy moves through everything alive, and there's no better place to first feel it moving through you than surrounded by the very aliveness you're learning to channel. Nature isn't the backdrop here - it's part of the transmission.

You'll also be in community - just eight students and me. Small by design. You'll practice on each other, feel energy move between real hands, share what arises, and witness one another's openings.

What is Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. The word combines "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life force energy), and the practice is based on the idea that a practitioner can channel this energy through their hands—either through light touch or hovering just above the body—to support relaxation, reduce stress, and promote the body's own healing processes.

A few key things about how it works in practice:

The lineage system: Reiki is traditionally passed down through "attunements" from a Reiki Master to a student, rather than learned purely from books. There are typically several levels:

Level I: Focuses on self-healing and hands-on treatment of others
Level II: Introduces sacred symbols and distance healing (sending energy without physical presence)
Level III/Master: Deepens practice and often includes teaching capability and more symbols
Level IIII/Master Teacher: Enables someone to attune others and pass on the lineage

What a session looks like: The recipient usually lies fully clothed on a table while the practitioner places hands lightly on or above different areas of the body (head, shoulders, torso, etc.), following a sequence, for a session that typically runs 30-90 minutes. People often report feelings of warmth, tingling, deep relaxation, or emotional release.

How it's understood: Practitioners describe it as working with a universal life force energy that flows through all living things, and that illness or imbalance stems from disruptions in this energy. From a scientific standpoint, Reiki is considered a complementary/alternative modality—there's no established biophysical mechanism, though some research points to benefits similar to other relaxation-based interventions (lowered stress markers, improved subjective wellbeing) even if the "energy" framework itself isn't something conventional science can measure.

It's widely used alongside conventional medicine (some hospitals even offer it) rather than as a replacement for it.

My Reiki Story

The Doorway I Didn't Choose

In 2010, I was an Environmental Educator. I worked for the non-profit, The Childrens Nature Institute. We served the most marginalized children in Los Angeles, and it was deeply rewarding work.

I was driving my work van to the office,

I looked down for paperwork — a few seconds too long. The van hit the curb and rolled over twice. I had been practicing breathwork, and thankfully I had the tools to support me until the ambulance arrived.

Surgeons at Cedars-Sinai put metal into my shattered arm, and two doctors told me the same thing: I would never use it properly again.

Something in me didn't believe them.

During my healing journey, I moved through almost all the stages of grief — except the last one, acceptance. There was a part of me that knew being handicapped was not my fate.

A friend offered me a Craniosacral session. The very next day, I sat with a Reiki Master named Chris Eagle. The morning after, I woke to tingling in my arm — the first sensation in six weeks. That tingling changed everything.

"What felt like a breaking was actually a doorway onto my spiritual path."

I went on to study under Chris and become a Reiki Master. I followed this path for my own healing. This time was also the opening to plant medicine. I sat with Grandmother Ayahuasca, in a gorgeous ceremony in the Santa Cruz Mountains. A strong lineage rooted in Peru.

This opened many invitations. to sit with Mayan Elders at a Wisdom Keeper Youth Council in 2012 (and I’ve been in ceremony with them ever since). As well as many Native American ceremonies and sweat lodges (I stopped counting at just over 100). In 2014, I also got the invitation to the Moon Dance in Teotihuacán, Mexico. I completed 8 years and I’m a pipe carrier and sweatlodge matriarch as iniated through the Ollintlahuimetztli lineage. A deep privilege and honor.

All the while, I was getting attunements from Chris until I got to the Master level. Chris gently encouraged me to offer sessions. "You have healing energy, Guzel. Offer it to others," he would say. I did, and got such amazing feedback from friends and loved ones. My practice grew organically, from an empowered place of healing.

Since then, Reiki has never once failed me, and witnessing my clients' healing has been one of the great joys of my life.

Reiki is a true gift in my life. I believe it can be one in yours, too.

Each Reiki teacher brings their unique wisdom and lived experience. Mine is rooted in family estrangement, overcoming a near traumatic accident, building community, and listening to the elders, to medicine and strengthing my bond to earth based spirituality. While actively keeping my heart open.

Life is a series of heartaches, but the more we can keep that heart open, the more love that wants to come in.
